News of Navalny’s death came Friday from the Federal Penitentiary Service in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District, above the Arctic Circle.

In a statement, prison authorities said Navalny “felt unwell” after a walk in the prison yard and soon lost consciousness. Attempts by emergency medics to resuscitate him “failed to give positive results.”

Navalny had been serving out a lengthy prison sentence for charges including extremism, which were widely seen as punishment for his years of criticism of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Putin has been informed of Navalny’s death. He said prison medics are working to identify the cause of death.

Reactions swiftly poured in from around the world. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Navalny’s “death in a Russian prison and the fixation and fear of one man only underscores the weakness and rot at the heart of the system that Putin has built. Russia is responsible for this.”

মীর মশাররফ হোসেন হলের শিক্ষার্থী ও ছাত্রলীগ নেতাকর্মী সূত্রে জানা যায়, শাখা ছাত্রলীগের আন্তর্জাতিক বিষয়ক সম্পাদক মোস্তাফিজুর রহমান হলের ৩১৭ নম্বর কক্ষে থাকতেন। এই কক্ষ তার বিভিন্ন অপকর্মের সাক্ষী। মূলত চাঁদাবাজি ও মুক্তিপণের জন্য কাউকে এই কক্ষেই আটকে নির্যাতন করা হতো। একে মোস্তাফিজ ও তার সহযোগীরা টর্চার সেল হিসেবে এবং নিয়মিত ইয়াবা, মদ সেবনের কাজে ব্যবহার করতেন।

শনিবার রাতেও স্বামীকে এই কক্ষে আটকে রেখে হলের পাশের জঙ্গলে নিয়ে তার স্ত্রীকে ধর্ষণের ঘটনা ঘটে। এর আগে গত বছরের জুলাই মাসে ৬ লাখ টাকা চাঁদার দাবিতে ২৪টি লেগুনা হলের সামনে আটকে রাখেন ছাত্রলীগ নেতাকর্মীরা। এ ঘটনার সঙ্গে মোস্তাফিজ ও অন্যদের সম্পৃক্ততা রয়েছে। এ ছাড়া হল সংলগ্ন ঢাকা-আরিচা মহাসড়কের সিঅ্যান্ডবি এলাকায় ছিনতাই, সিঅ্যান্ডবি, ডেইরি গেট ও হলের সামনের দোকানগুলো থেকে নিয়মিত চাঁদা আদায় করতেন তারা।

কিছুদিন আগে একই কক্ষে আশুলিয়া থানার একজন পুলিশ কনস্টেবলকে আটকে রেখে নির্যাতন এবং ৫০ লাখ টাকা দাবি করা হয়। আশুলিয়া থানার তৎকালীন ভারপ্রাপ্ত কর্মকর্তার সমঝোতায় ঘটনাটি ধামাচাপা দেয়া হয় বলেও জানা যায়।

এ ছাড়া হলের শিক্ষার্থী ও ছাত্রলীগ সূত্রে জানা যায়, মোস্তাফিজ ও বহিরাগত মামুন বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে ইয়াবার কারবার করতেন। এ কারণে প্রায়ই মামুন হলে এসে থাকতেন। ঘটনার দিনও তারা হলে ছিলেন।

এ ঘটনায় এখন পর্যন্ত ধরাছোঁয়ার বাইরে আছেন বহিরাগত মামুনুর রশীদ মামুন (৪৫) এবং স্বামীকে আটকে রাখায় সহায়তা ও মারধর করা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের আন্তর্জাতিক সম্পর্ক বিভাগের শিক্ষার্থী মো. মুরাদ। মামুন এই ধর্ষণকাণ্ডের মূল হোতা।

মামলার এজাহার সূত্রে জানা যায়, মামুনের বাড়ি নওগাঁ জেলার পল্লীতলা। তার বাবার নাম হাসির উদ্দিন। শাখা ছাত্রলীগের অভিযুক্ত নেতাদের সঙ্গে মাদক কারবারের সম্পর্ক ছিল মামুনের। মামুন নিয়মিত বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের মীর মশাররফ হোসেন হলে মাদক সেবন করতে আসতেন ও মাদকের জোগান দিতেন।

পলাতক ব্যক্তিদের গ্রেফতারের বিষয়ে আশুলিয়া থানার পরিদর্শক (তদন্ত) মোহাম্মদ মাসুদুর রহমান বলেন, ‘পলাতক দুজনের অনুসন্ধানে আমাদের টিম কাজ করছে। খোঁজ পাওয়া মাত্রই আপনাদের জানানো হবে।’
